SUNSET, LA (WAFB) - Authorities in St. Landry Parish are slapping some hefty charges on the man accused of killing a police officer in Sunset, La.
Cpt. Clay Higgins with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office said the department charged Harrison Riley, 35, with 1st degree murder for the shooting death of Sunset police officer Henry Nelson, 52, and 1st degree murder for stabbing of Shameka Johnson, 41, who also died Wednesday, August 26 during what police called a domestic dispute.
Riley is also charged with five counts of attempted 1st degree murder and faces two counts of arson. Cpt. Higgins said Riley set the Mini Mart on fire after crashing his car into it.
9News also learned Riley has an extensive rap sheet dating back to 1997. He was arrested for several things like selling schedule 2 drugs, possession of a stolen fire arm, and several counts for allegedly running away from authorities. Most of these charges were filed in New Orleans. Cpt. Higgins said that he is glad Riley is finally off the streets.
"It's my hope personally that he never sees the light of day again," said Higgins.
Riley was briefly rushed to a hospital this morning after he was found unresponsive, but deputies say they later found out he was faking injuries.
Officer Nelson's funeral is set to start at 11 a.m. on September 5 at Zion Traveler's Baptist Church in Sunset, La.
