GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - A former U.S. Coast Guard member who was indicted on an aggravated rape charge has pleaded guilty one day before his trial was set to begin.
Robert Guzman, 43, of Gonzales entered a guilty plea Monday to one count of aggravated rape and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of probation, parole or a suspension of sentence.
Guzman was arrested and indicted on four counts of aggravated rape and molestation of a juvenile in December 2014 by an Ascension Parish grand jury. He was also accused of having sex with a minor under the age of 13 in Louisiana, Texas and Florida and having sex with a juvenile over 13 in Louisiana.
Prosecutor Shawn Bush says that she hopes that this outcome will help Guzman's victim and her family begin to heal.
"The crimes committed by Robert Guzman are the most despicable crimes that can be perpetrated against a minor child," says Bush. "I pray that this child can find peace in her life and can somehow learn to trust again. Guzman's actions were unconscionable and no amount of years can undo the damage that has been done."
