Bayou Vista Elementary lockdown lifted, investigation into shooting continues

BAYOU VISTA, LA (WAFB) - Bayou Vista Elementary school in Bayou Vista was placed on lockdown as a safety measure Wednesday morning after a shooting happened near the school around 11 a.m. Around 2 p.m. the lockdown was lifted.

Deputies with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office were called to a house in the 400 block of Saturn Road in Bayou Vista. When deputies arrived, they found a 47-year-old woman who had been shot multiple times in the upper body.

During the investigation, detectives learned the victim heard a noise and went into her backyard to investigate. The suspect was by a fence at the back of the property and saw the victim. He then confronted the woman and pulled out a gun. After a brief argument, the suspect fired the gun multiple times and ran from the area.

The suspect is described as a heavy set, olive complected white or Hispanic male with short, blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a striped shirt and khaki pants.

The victim is in stable condition at a New Orleans hospital.
