BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An 11th grade student was arrested by the School Drug Task Force with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office after they responded to a report Tuesday morning about a gun found in a backpack at McKinley High School.

Owen Galo, 17, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and obliterated serial number. No bond has been set for Galo yet.

Deputies say Galo was involved in a fight with another student at the bus stop. When he got to campus, administrators searched both of the student's backpacks and found a loaded .380 handgun in Galo's backpack.

Deputies say they are not aware of any threats being made. Galo told authorities he didn't know where the gun came from.

Students with information about this or any similar incidents are encouraged to bring it up to an administrator at school. They can also contact the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office at 225-389-5000 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 225-344-7867. Students can also text "CS225" and a message to 274637.
