A CATS committee says that the transit system's board should buy $3.6 million worth of new buses, according to the Baton Rouge Business Report.
The committee is asking the board to approve the purchase of eight new buses at the cost of $450,000 each. The board already approved the purchase of four new buses to be delivered in 2016.
The Business Report says that the money will go toward replacing old buses, rather than adding to the fleet's total. CATS officials say this is because some bus drivers say that they are driving outdated, potentially unsafe buses.
"This at least addresses some issues. You are taking aged buses off the road and replacing them with a new, dependable, shiny fleet," says CATS spokeswoman Amie McNaylor.
The full board will take up the issue at its monthly meeting next week.
