BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Another school has been approved to use the building that used to house Redemptorist High School. Cristo Rey Baton Rouge, part of the Cristo Rey Network of high schools, will open its doors for classes in August 2016.

The Catholic based school, geared toward low-income students, will focus on college-prep academics and teaching students responsibility, through work.

Cristo Rey operates with a corporate work study program. They team up area businesses with students. The students' salary pays for their tuition.

James Llorens, the president of the Baton Rouge campus, says one full-time position will be shared by four students.

Those students will work one day a week at their assigned job. If they can't maintain their job, they will not be allowed to stay at the school.

"It may start out as answering phones, filing. We hope to train them in database entry, stuff like that," said Llorens.

Things like accounting, finances and marketing. The rest of the week they focus on academics.

When it opens in 2016, only incoming ninth graders will be at the school. They will gradually add other grade levels.

Llorens says they anticipate students will be about two grade levels behind. For instance, if a student is behind in math, it's possible they could take two math classes to get where they should be.

The school president says the model has had success in the past because those businesses take an interest in their student workers education and become mentors as well.

The model, Llorens says, is not for everyone.

Parents will also be responsible for some of the dollars, giving them a stake in their child's education.

"Families are asked to make a small contribution to the cost of their education. We won't deny anyone admission because of finances ... ask they contribute in some way."

Applications will be on their website http://www.cristoreybatonrouge.org/ on September 1, 2015.
