BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - State Treasurer John Kennedy said a court ruling means Louisiana can claim nearly $500,000 and he wants the federal government to hand it over.
Kennedy said the state filed a suit trying to take custody of more than $460,000 worth of saving bonds . He said these are bonds that were bought decades ago and forgotten about, but now he wants to get people there money.
"What I'm trying to do is get them to turn over this $460,000 to me as State Treasurer, then I'm going to contact the owners of the bonds and return the money to them," said Kennedy. "And we're just going to keep pounding on the federal government until they return this money to its rightful owners."
In total, Kennedy said he believes the state has more than $200 million in unclaimed bonds.
