One person is in the hospital after being overtaken by smoke due to a house fire late Monday night.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it happened on Delaware Street a few minutes after 10 p.m.

Mark Miles with BRFD said firefighters could see flames shooting through the window of the home when they arrived on the scene, but could not get into the house because of burglar bars on the door.

He said firemen started spraying water through the windows to fight the flames. He added when crews went to the back of the house to check another door, they saw the homeowner lying on the ground in the backyard.

According to Miles, the victim had been overtaken by the smoke from the fire, so firefighters gave the person oxygen until EMS arrived to take the victim to the hospital. The person’s condition is unknown. A name was not given.

Investigators reported the cause of the fire was accidental and foul play is not suspected.

They added the house caused heavy fire and smoke damage.
