Family dog dies in house fire ruled arson

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said a family was not there when a fire was intentionally set to a home early Monday morning, but unfortunately, their dog was and couldn't escape.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department has ruled the fire as arson. It happened on Birch Street around 3 a.m.

Firefighters reported flames were shooting out of the home when they arrived at the scene.

They added they could not get into the home because of the burglar bars on the doors.

Mark Miles with BRFD said members of the department's rescue unit was able to eventually pry the doors open.

There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the home.

No other injuries were reported.

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 344-7867.
