This week’s “Your Turn” segment goes to Debra Nance. Nance is one of dozens of people who reacted to the story about Louisiana public schools ranking poorly when compared to other states.
On our Facebook page, people were quick to blame just about everybody. Nance thinks the culprit is our unwillingness to change.
In her words: The problem is that some teachers and parents want the status quo. It is easier to teach a lesson plan you already have than to change the way you have been teaching. Also, since new concepts are unknown to parents, they are scared of the consequences and may not be able to help their child. However, what is the alternative? Obviously, the status quo is not working. Kids live up to the expectations of their parents and teachers. We should demand the best effort from them.
That’s Debra Nance’s turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, visit us on Facebook or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
