PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - A group is helping people clear old arrests and warrants from their records with a big event in West Baton Rouge Parish this weekend.
The community organization, RAX Worldwide, will host a free expungement event Saturday, August 1.
"What an expungement is is when a criminal conviction is sealed or destroyed from the state or federal repository," Richard Slaughter with RAX Worldwide said. "So, what it is is like it never existed and you can move forward and get a job, provide for your family and not have to revert back to previous activity."
There are dozens of Louisiana laws that pertain to the process of expungement. Slaughter hopes to help people navigate through them and offer legal advice, all at no cost.
"The main goal is to get records clear and then get them jobs, cut down on this unemployment problem we have in Louisiana.Lawyer fees can run $1,500 for what we're talking about - criminal to anything - it's all free, legal counsel," Slaughter added.
The event will be held at the Port Allen Community Center at 749 North Jefferson Avenue. It is open to everyone, no matter where you live.
You will need to bring picture identification, as well as any documents related to the charges you're seeking to expunge.
The event will last from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
