BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office is warning about a scam that uses the victim's social security number against them.
First, the victim receives a call saying that they have warrants out for their arrest for defaulting on a loan. In some cases the scammer obtained the victim's social security number, and will use it with other personal information to make their claim seem more legitimate. The scammer, posing as a detective, will then demand money from the victim.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office says that this is a scam, and that personal information should never be given over the phone.
Any questions about warrants in St. Mary Parish can be solved by calling 337-907-0407.
