BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Supplies are critically low at the Baton Rouge Food Bank, but one local church helped ease the summer strain.
"It's such a simple, basic need and Baton Rouge is fortunate to have such a strong organization such as the food bank. We're fortunate there's a group that's really on top of this," Rick Wright, Minister of Missions at University Baptist Church.
University Baptist Church donated thousands of items Monday to the food bank. It was part of a month-long donation drive.
"This is not something we normally do. We have had drives like this before. We had one last summer that went pretty well, but this time we really pushed it and promoted it," said Wright. "There are certain times each year that the food bank is low on donations, so part of it is the need and part of it is the timing."
Hundreds of members packed the church with canned goods and other items. Wright hopes to make it an annual event and maybe do a couple other collections throughout the year.
"You have to be careful not to overdo it, because there can be donor fatigue," said Wright.
