The Louisiana Attorney General's Office wants to warn people about possible donation scams following the mass shooting at the Grand Theater in Lafayette.
The AG's Office says the sprouting of online donation scams happen often after tragic events.
The Attorney General advises people to be diligent before giving.
"If it's something that just popped up overnight that you have never heard of, that has a unique hashtag or some name that associates itself with a recent event, always suspect of those and do some research and check them out," says Sam Pleasant, Director of the Louisiana Department of Justice Public Protection Division A.
To protect yourself, ask a lot of questions and find out how much of the money will go to the beneficiary. Also, use a credit card or check that way you can cancel the payment if you need to.
If you have any questions, you can contact the Attorney General's Office at 1-800-351-4889 or go to agbuddycaldwell.com.
