ALSEN, LA (WAFB) - This Friday July 24th at 7 p.m., a free concert will honor Rock of Ages Brother Lafayette Harrison of St. John Baptist Church in Alsen for his 50 years of dedicated musical service. Harrison is 64.
He was a teenager when he first started playing piano and organizing a youth choir.
Tamara Coleman, who's sung in his choir for 35 years, is helping to organize the celebration. He knows about it, he just doesn't know the scope of what will happen, she tells me. "There will be guest speakers who have been inspirational in his life. We have formed a celebration choir, consisting of people who were under his direction from the 1960s on up."
Coleman says "He has played for funerals for people that he didn't even know, just so there would be someone there who cared. He loves cooking food, he loves making deserts...He invites people to his home sometimes to come eat!"
"He does so many things behind the scenes, and he doesn't look for praises for his pat on the back. He's very spiritual."
Bro. Harrison has grown the music portion of worship to include anyone who wants to raise their voice in praise.
When I asked what he usually wears, there was no single answer.
"He wears a choir robe on 2nd and 4th Sundays. We(the adult choir) wear choir robes on those Sundays. And on the First Sunday(of the month), they have a uniform T-shirt for the St. John Baptist Church Male chorus." Coleman says that choir always as 30 or more men in it."
"You don't get many people who dedicate 50 years of service...he's helped form churches in other choirs."
He's come a long way and shows no sign of stopping.
Friday night, the angels in heaven may sing along with the special choir for Brother Lafayette Harrison. You are invited. St. John Baptist Church, 820 New Rafe Meyer Road in Alsen. It all starts at 7 p.m.
