The SEC Baseball Tournament has called Hoover, Alabama home its since 1998. The LSU Tigers have certainly enjoyed great success at the event under head coach Paul Mainieri, winning the tournament in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014.
But should the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium continue to be the host or should the SEC alternate locations, like it does for their basketball and softball tournaments? New commissioner Greg Sankey addressed the issue recently at SEC Football Media Days.
“We’ve had a great run of success, here in Hoover,” Sankey said. "And a facility that’s met our needs and continues to meet our needs. It’s been public there’s another year left on that agreement. And we’ll spend some time over the next ten months, maybe even sooner, to evaluate the feelings of our athletic directors, our baseball coaches and eventually make a decision about the future direction.”
While some fans may want the tournament played along the coast, perhaps overlooking the water or maybe in another city like Memphis, Sankey reiterates Hoover has mostly been a home run for the SEC.
“The good news is, we’ve had a great situation here,” he continued. “Our fans have been attracted. It’s relatively central. And we certainly want to consider
that history, even in our consideration of the future.”
