THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - Nearly 200 people waited outside a Thibodaux hospital after three men were injured during a drive-by shooting. The crowd was so large that additional police officers were called out to help secure the area.
"The additional personnel were called out to assist with notifying the family members, assist with the crowd, and assist with securing the secondary crime scene," said David Melancon, public information officer with the Thibodaux Police Department.
The secondary crime scene was the vehicle that was used to transport two of the victims to the hospital. Sadly, Derrick Reed, 34, died as a result of his injuries.
"The vehicle was eventually brought back to the Thiboodaux Police Department for processing," Melancon noted.
The third victim was located in the 200 block of Sanders Street, which is where the shooting occurred. It happened at roughly 9 p.m.
"The investigation remains open at this time," Melancon added. "Investigators are following up on leads."
Witnesses say Reed had recently begun training to become a minister.
