THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - A man out on bond in connection with a shooting was arrested Saturday night on drug and other charges after a traffic stop.
The Thibodaux Police Department reported Willie Azema III, 19, of Thibodaux, was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of marijuana (first offense), flight from an officer, resisting an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to dim headlights. His bond was set at $5,300.
Police Chief Scott Silverii said officers tried to pull over a Chevrolet Malibu because the driver didn't dim the headlights. He said Azema was driving. He added the car pulled into a gas station, crossed the parking lot and stopped near the fuel pumps.
Investigators said the car then sped off. They added it later stopped and the passenger got out. Police said one of the officers was able to grab the car and open the driver's side door. They reported the driver refused to put the car in park and drove off with the officer holding on to him.
According to reports, the officer was eventually able to put the car in park and arrested Azema. Silverii said the officers found $1,100 in cocaine and marijuana inside the car. He added they also located a digital scale on Azema. The passenger reportedly cooperated with police and was not charged.
Police said Azema was arrested on July 8 in connection with a shooting that happened in June. He was released on bond two days later.
The investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
