A former Evergreen Police Chief has been arrested and charged with murder in Avoyelles Parish.

Avoyelles Parish Sheriff Doug Anderson has announced that they have arrested 36-year-old Charles Mayeux for the murder of his wife in March.

Deputies say on March 21 around 2 a.m., 911 received a call from Mayeux reporting that his home on Cottage Street was on fire. When local fire and EMS responded to the fire, they discovered the remains of his wife, Shelly St. Romain Mayeux, inside of the home.

The initial investigation conducted by State Fire Marshalls found evidence that the fire may have begun under suspicious circumstances. Fire Marshalls then alerted APSO Detectives who then conducted an additional investigation of the crime scene. As a result of that investigation, investigators began an investigation into the death of Shelly Mayeux.

As a result of the joint investigation, Charles Mayeux was arrested and charged with one count of 2nd degree murder and one count of aggravated arson.

Mayeux was also charged with six counts of malfeasance in office and six counts of theft from a separate investigation. That case alleges that while serving as the Police Chief of Evergreen between 2013 and 2014, Mayeux misappropriated funds by falsifying gas records and converting the proceeds into funds for personal use.

Mayeux's bond has been set at $350,000.
