PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - A grand jury has indicted a teacher accused of having sex with his former students.
An Iberville Parish grand jury formally charged Keavin Keith, 30, of Plaquemine, with five counts of felony carnal knowledge and 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. The Iberville Parish District Attorney's Office said if convicted Keith could face up to 50 years and 6 months behind bars.
Keith is currently free on bond. He is expected back in court at the end of July.
According to Sheriff Brett Stassi Sr., one of Keith's former students reported the two of them had a sexual relationship while she was still a student at MSA-West Academy, where he was a teacher. Keith was arrested later that night.
Stassi also stated the investigation revealed Keith was allegedly having sexual relations with two other students. The alleged victims are 15 and 16 years old.
"Anytime you have a case that involves these young children, that's the worse of the worse. Especially when you're talking about somebody in the school system." said Stassi.
The sheriff added the results from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab showed Keith fathered the child of one of the victims associated with the investigation. The mother of the victim gave 9News her take on the indictment.
"He certainly deserves to pay for what he did, but 50 years is not going to give any time on the outside to work and support his children," said the mother.
Elvis Cavalier is chief academic officer of the Iberville Parish School Board and founder of MSA-West Academy. He said Keith recently won teacher of the year at MSA and was a favorite among students.
Officials said Keith has no prior arrests. He was a teacher in the parish school system for six years.
