Miss USA contestants meet some Best Buddies, take to the water for some kayaking

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The tour of Baton Rouge continued for contestants in next week's Miss USA pageant with a trip to BREC's Greenwood Park for some kayaking Friday morning and a reception with a group that helps disabled young people in the evening.

Contestants have been getting a taste of Louisiana's culture all week. They have been trying out classic foods, hangouts and even second lining with Mayor Kip Holden.

So, what do these ladies love most about Louisiana?

"I'm down here for a pageant, but you would think that it was a food contest because there's so much delicious food and I'm enjoying all the hospitality and everyone here is so kind and so gracious," said Renee Bull, Miss Delaware USA.

"The food is amazing and everyone is just so nice," said Ashley Golebiewski, Miss Connecticut USA. "I love it. I want to move down here, down South. So definitely those two things."

The contestants spent Friday night meeting with members of Best Buddies in Baton Rouge, which is celebrating 10 years. The event was held at the Old Governor's Mansion on North Boulevard. They were greeted with sweet treats before a full-blown reception with music and good food.

All of the fun turns into serious competition next week, as the contestants get ready for preliminary rounds. Events start on Wednesday.
