BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters believe lightning caused two house fires in Baton Rouge on Tuesday.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported the first happened on Maximilian Street just before 3:15 p.m.
Mark Miles with BRFD said flames were shooting through the roof of the back of the house and that part of the home was burning when crews arrived on the scene.
He added the home had heavy fire and smoke damage. No one was home at the time. No injuries were reported.
The second fire happened on Sycamore Street around 3:45 p.m.
Investigators said based on information from the two people inside the house at the time, they think lightning hit a piece of metal on the roof at the back of the home.
According to Miles, crews arrived on the scene to find smoke billowing from the attic. He added they later found fire in a part of the attic above the dining and living rooms.
Officials said firefighters kept the flames contained to the attic, but other parts of the house had water and smoke damage.
The Red Cross was called out to assist the family.
