Pedestrian hit and killed by vehicle near Plaquemine

PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian hit and killed early this morning.

Police say the accident happened just before 4 a.m. Tuesday on LA 1 north of LA 992-3 near Plaquemine.

According to State Police, 66-year-old Gene Ellis was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of LA 1 when he was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 31-year-old Jeremy Gulotta. Ellis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gulotta who was wearing a seatbelt at the time was not injured in the accident. A breathalyzer test taken by Gulotta at the scene showed no detectable signs of impairment.

Investigators say that impairment is suspected to be a factor for Ellis. A toxicology test was taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
