EBR Council on Aging gives out fans to help seniors 'beat the heat'

Volunteers keep seniors cool by handing out fans

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Senior citizens without air conditioning for the summer will get some needed assistance as a part of an initiative by the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging.

The council kicked off its annual "Beat the Heat" fan drive on Monday. They normally hand out about 2,000 to 3,000 fans every summer.

"We're providing fans for some of the seniors who do not have working air conditioners in their home," says Trudy Bihm, Information Assistance Director of the EBR Council on Aging. "They come down to the Council on Aging, do a quick assessment, and we give them a fan."

About 500 fans have already been brought in thanks to local businesses and will find their way into the hands of the elderly within the coming weeks along with thousands more that can still be donated.

Business and individuals are urged to donate any new air conditioning units or cooling fans. Donations are being accepted at the council's main location on Florida Boulevard, as well as any St. George Fire Station until Sunday, July 5.

For more information, call the council at (225) 923-8000.
