Police: Murdered woman was not the intended target of the shooting

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Department arrested a man on charges of second degree murder after a 21-year-old woman was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

Deputies say shots were fired in the air from a dark-colored vehicle, in front of a house were a large party was being held. The shooting happened in the 6800 block of E. Upland around 2:15 a.m.

The warrant states 23-year-old Elton Dontails Gaines III was standing in front of the house and began firing shots at the vehicle. As the vehicle drove away, Gaines is accused of firing more shots in the direction of the vehicle.

At the same time of the shooting, 21-year-old Donisha Patterson was riding in a vehicle near the area where Gaines was firing shots.

Detectives say Patterson and the vehicle she was riding in were not the intended targets of the shooting.

Gaines was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday after turning himself in. He has been charged with second degree murder, illegal carrying of a weapon and illegal use of a weapon. His bond has been set at $250,000.

The shooting remains under investigation.
