GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office reported that a camera containing radioactive material was found Thursday night a couple miles south of I-10 on Airline Hwy (U.S.61) in St. James Parish. It was not compromised, and DEQ was on the scene to carefully remove the camera.

Search crews were able to find the camera in a muddy ditch by retracing the truck's GPS route, according to Sgt. Nick Manale with Louisiana State Police. Earlier in the day, the emergency crews searching for it didn't go as far down U.S. 61 based on the driver's statement.

APSO originally reported the camera missing from an industrial truck carrying radioactive material Thursday morning somewhere on I-10 between LA 30 and the border with St. James Parish.

A worker with experience in that particular industry said the camera is possibly used to X-ray welds. He added there is little threat to the public unless the camera fell off the truck and cracked.
