GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - The principal of Gonzales Primary school is a finalist for Louisiana Principal of the Year.
Jaimee Williams became principal in 2012, and turned Gonzales Primary from a school with an "F" performance, to a school that was a half point away from a "B" in a year.
"My priority was to seek out teachers who wanted to be here," says Williams. "Essentially, we had to build a culture of collective efficacy."
Williams sparked an interest in teaching, when the organization she worked for, the New Orleans Saints, began their "Teach for America" initiative. She says that the experience working with schools as a part of the initiative gave her the urge to go into teaching.
The Principal of the Year finalist does not have plans to stop improving on her school any time soon. "It's just not good enough that we are meeting basic level performance," says Williams. "We must continually raise expectations."
The winner of the award will be announced on July 11. More information about the other semifinalists can be found HERE.
