Traffic stop for seatbelt violation leads to felony drug arrest

THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - Thibodaux Police have arrested a man for drug possession and possession of a firearm after he was caught not wearing a seatbelt.

Police say around 11:30 p.m. Friday, 32-year-old Tremaine Washington was spotted driving a white Cadillac without his seatbelt at the intersection of Lagarde Street and East 12th Street.

After Washington was pulled over, officers say that they could smell what they believed to be marijuana. While one of the officers patted down Washington, he attempted to run. After a brief chase he was apprehended.

During the investigation, officers recovered illegal drugs such as crack cocaine, MDMA and marijuana. A semi-automatic weapon was also found.

Washington was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he has been charged with possession of MDMA, possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana, illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a CDS, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer, and no seat belt.

He is currently being held on $70,550 bond.
