EAST FELICIANA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon says that some residents of East Feliciana Parish will see a drop in fire insurance rates.
Home owners living in Jackson outside of Jackson corporate limits and Wilson outside of the Wilson corporate limits can expect significant rate reductions in their fire insurance premiums. The reduced rates are set to take effect July 6.
The reduced rates are a result of improvements in fire protection ratings by firefighters and local officials in Jackson and Wilson. Their ratings were reduced from a Class 5 to a Class 4.
The fire protection grading is done by the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (PIAL) and approved by the Louisiana Insurance Commissioner. All fire districts are graded on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 representing no fire protection and 1 being the best.
A variety of factors are considered in determining a district's grading such as the number of dispatchers on duty, the number of firefighters and fire trucks and the availability of water.
"I applaud the efforts of the communities and officials that brought about these improved fire protection gradings," says Donelon. "The lower gradings mean homeowners will not only see lower premiums for fire insurance, but will also have the peace of mind that comes with knowing their homes and families are better protected from fire."
The amount of the rate reduction will vary by homeowner. The rate will depend on the value of the property, the fire district where the home is located and the rate schedule of the company insuring the company.
