While we believe Baton Rouge is “Better Together,” we certainly understand why the plan to create the city of St. George was attractive to thousands of area residents.
The East Baton Rouge Registrar of Voters says the St. George organizers came up 71 signatures short of the number required to force a vote on the issue. Some of the St. George supporters are threatening legal action, and if they have real evidence of wrongdoing, we hope they follow through on the threat. On the other hand, if the process was handled fairly for the most part, we hope that the St. George proponents and those on the other side will be gracious in victory and defeat.
To their credit, the St. George supporters may have accomplished even more than they realize. Through their movement, many people became truly engaged in the political process and they held our parish political leaders accountable for their actions. Our democracy almost always works better when that happens.
