OMAHA, NE (WAFB) - LSU beat Cal State Fullerton 5-3 in a College World Series elimination game and will now again face the team that forced the Tigers into the losers' bracket.
Paul Mainieri stayed positive after what he called LSU's worst game in his nine years as a coach. Alex Lange had a rocky start in the bottom of the first inning, as Fullerton tallied three runs. However, the 3-0 lead didn't last long, as the Tigers responded with four in the top of the third.
Senior Kade Scivicque had a huge day, slapping an RBI single that scored Alex Bregman to make it 3-1. Chris Sciambra followed Scivicque with an RBI of his own, scoring Jake Fraley to close the Titans' lead to 3-2. After an Andrew Stevenson sacrifice fly tied the game at 3, Mark Laird hit one into right field for an RBI single. LSU had six singles and took a 4-3 lead.
The Tigers added an insurance run on a Danny Zardon sac fly, scoring Scivicque. But, it was Lange who just got stronger as the game got longer, striking out the side in the eighth. He fired a six-hitter game with 10 strikeouts.
"It just shows why he's the pitcher he is," Fraley said. "I mean, why everyone that talks about Lange. He just proved he's that person and even more. I think today was one of his better games, even tough he had that rough first start."
LSU won its first game in Omaha since 2009.
The Tigers and Horned Frogs will meet again Thursday at 7 p.m.
