BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Southern University Board of Supervisors has selected Dr. Ray Belton as the new President and Chancellor of the university system.
Belton has several leadership positions under his belt, including serving as president of Southern University's Shreveport campus. Under his watch, the school's enrollment increased over 150%, and was recognized as the 22nd fastest-growing institution of its size, as well as one of the best performing institutions in the country.
The Southern University System board voted 13-to-1 in favor of naming the Shreveport native as the new university president and chancellor.
"It is an absolute honor to be afforded this occasion to serve this Board and to serve this institution to whom I remain indebted," said Belton. "As president and chancellor of the Southern University System, I will give my all."
Belton will begin his watch in his new role on July 1, one day after the previous president, Ronald Mason Jr., leaves to become president of the University of the District of Columbia.
