BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Law enforcement agencies across East Baton Rouge Parish weighed in on the possibly of a misdemeanor jail.
Authorities met at Baton Rouge City Court to discuss the ins and outs of the jail. East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said the meeting was about letting every agency in the parish know the plans for the potential building.
Gautreaux said the reason why law enforcement is making a strong push is because they believe the misdemeanor jail could eliminate outstanding warrants and overcrowding concerns.
"It would alleviate some of the overcrowding at Parish prison that we have now because we wouldn't have to put people with misdemeanors into the system," said Gautreaux.
Gautreaux said authorities are in the process of the creating a budget before taking their idea for a vote by Metro Council.
