BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The House and Senate Thursday passed a compromised version of the proposed cigarette tax hike from Rep. Harold Ritchie, D-Bogalusa.
The tax passed both chambers at a finalized 86 cents per pack. That's 50 cents higher than Louisiana's current cigarette tax.
"This is my own version of the 'SAVE' bill," said Rep. Harold Ritchie, referencing the controversial proposed higher education fee. "This will save lives," he said.
Rep. James Armes, D-Leesville, was one of 29 members of the House who were opposed.
"If you want to be a puppet, be a puppet," Rep. Armes said in opposition.
The bill now goes to Gov. Jindal's desk.
