Walker Police announces 11th annual 'From Our Uniform to Yours' school uniform drive

WALKER, LA (WAFB) - This summer begins the Walker Police Department's 11th annual "From Our Uniform to Yours" school uniform drive. From now through the end of June, Walker Police will collect new and used school uniforms which meet the requirements of Livingston Parish Schools.

Once collected, the uniforms will be professionally cleaned, sized and prepares for distribution to families with school children who need a little help outfitting their children for the new school year. In addition to school uniforms, there is a great need for cash and uniform vendor gift cards.

"Each year, no matter how many new and used school uniforms are donated to the program, we always have instances in which we don't receive all the sizes that we need or enough of the popular sizes," explained Walker Captain John Sharp. "If we run out of certain sizes, or don't receive donations of certain sized uniforms, some children could be left out. The goal of our program is to never send anyone away empty handed. The donation of cash and vendor gift cards allows us to purchase the sizes we didn't receive and more of the sizes that are in high demand. This way, no one is left out, and that is extremely important to the success of the school uniform program."

Blue collection barrels for new and used uniforms are located at Walker Baptist Church, Walker Walgreens, the Quick & Handy Cleaners in Walker, Carter's Grocery in Walker and Walker Winn Dixie.

Uniforms may also be dropped off at the Walker Police Department, as well as monetary donations and vendor gift cards.

The Walker Police Department is located at 13179 Burgess Avenue in Walker, and donations may be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Donations in the form of checks can be made payable to the Walker Police Department and mailed to P.O. Box 988, Walker, LA 70785.

"Checks and uniform vendor gift cards may be mailed as well, but we ask that donors not send cash through the mail," Captain Sharp stated. "Anyone wishing to contribute cash should drop their donation off at the Police Department. Anyone who wants to make a donation but is unable to drive to the Police Department may call us at (225) 664-3125 and we will come to your home or place of business and pick up your donation." Captain Sharp stated that cash donations may also be made through PayPal.

Walker Police will distribute the school uniforms on Friday, July 24th, from 8 a.m. until noon at the Walker Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, located at 10696 Florida Blvd., in Walker.

Attendees will be provided pizza from Mr. Gatti's, Dominos & Rotolo's, Coca Cola products from Coke, water from Carter's Grocery and Winn Dixie and Lemonade and Iced Tea from Raising Cane's.
