BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Police arrested a man suspected of intentionally starting a fire Wednesday evening at the apartment complex where he lives.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department was called out to a fire at an apartment complex on Sherwood Meadow Drive around 6:30 p.m.
BRFD reported John Akbar, 38, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of aggravated arson. No bond was set.
According to the probable cause report, a witness described how Akbar allegedly set the fire. The report added Akbar admitted during questioning that he "intentionally ignited gasoline on his back patio using a cigarette lighter."
According to authorities, after starting outside one unit, the fire quickly spread to others, ripping through several apartments and engulfed the middle section of the building in flames.
BRPD officers and deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office who were patrolling the area arrived first on the scene and helped evacuate the building. Firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to get the fire under control in about an hour. No injuries were reported.
