BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A court order has granted Albert Woodfox's release. He has spent more than four decades in a cell at Angola.
Woodfox was placed in solitary confinement in 1972 after being charged in the death of a prison guard April that year. He is the last member of the so-called Angola Three still in prison.
A federal judge in Baton Rouge also barred state prosecutors from trying him for a third time. Both previous convictions were overturned.
The state says it will appeal the ruling.
Woodfox is currently still at the West Feliciana Parish prison where he was taken to await trial.
