BRPD officer-K9 team wins national award

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Two Baton Rouge police officers won a national award Wednesday for a meth bust they made in October.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Cpl. Luke Cowart and K9 Rukus were presented the USPCA National Detector Case of the Year Award for finding 48 candles of meth mixed in wax on a commercial passenger bus on October 16, 2014.

The bus was stopped on I-12 East in Baton Rouge around 2:15 a.m. Officials said whild searching the luggage cargo area, Rukus alerted officers to a suitcase. Investigators found the meth mixed in wax disguised as candles.

Jose Antonio Rodriguez-Lara, 19, of Houston, Texas, was arrested.

BRPD reported Cowart and Rukus placed 12th in the overall competition.
