BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A reward for some Baton Rouge mothers who are paying their debt to society and want to better parents.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office hosted an event Tuesday called "One Day With Kids" at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
More than 50 children were able to spend time with their moms who are in jail for one reason or another.
To take part in the event, inmates had to complete the Second Chance 2 Recovery Program. Its goal is to develop more positive relationships with their children to strengthen family bonds.
"The biggest obstacle is them being here and having to wait to put those skills into action," said Project Coordinator Tiffany Franklin. "So, they're learning everything and trying to do things differently. But the challenge is they don't get to see their children everyday, just every now and then and sometimes through supervised visits they don't get that intimacy."
A few of the parents said the first thing they want to do when they get out of prison is to celebrate missed birthdays.
