BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A spokesman for Southern University has confirmed that former president Dr. Dolores Spikes has died.
She was 78 years old.
Spikes served as president of the university from the late 80s to the mid-90s.
Friends and colleagues say she served at a critical time for Southern.
"I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Dolores Spikes' passing. Her brilliance was only matched by her zeal for improving the access and impact of education for a diverse array of students," said Rep. Cedric Richmond. "Her contributions to higher education in Louisiana and throughout the country cannot be overstated. She blazed a trail and built a legacy that will live on for generations to come. My heartfelt sympathies and prayers are with her family and loved ones."
