Grand jury declines to indict officers in death of Lafayette Parish man

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) -

A grand jury declined to indict a group of police officers involved in the arrest of a Lafayette Parish man.

30-year-old Robert Minjarez died in March 2014 only five days after police pinned him to the ground while cuffing his hands in feet. The coroner's report said he died of Compressional Asphyxia, meaning that he was crushed. The report also says that the suspect had cocaine in his system.

The grand jury said that they found no evidence of a criminal act by the police officers.

In a statement, the New Orleans division of the FBI says that an investigation into the suspect's death was conducted, but “The investigation did not develop any information with which the DOJ Civil Rights Unit could prosecute.”
