ADDIS, LA (WAFB) - The cause of an Addis train derailment has been revealed.
A Union Pacific spokesperson says that the failed side bearing on one wheel of the rail car was the preliminary cause of the incident. The bearing was supposed to allow the car to shift its center of gravity enough to get around a curve.
When the bearing failed, the car attached to the faulty bearing tipped over and took five other cars with it.
Some cars were carrying hazardous materials, and two neighborhoods had to be evacuated.
Union Pacific is still investigating to see if the failed bearing with within its expiration date. A full report is said to be weeks away.
