People who only go to the Salvation Army's Airline Highway thrift store may not know that there will be tons of freebies Saturday in the adjacent headquarters and grounds.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a Health Fair with all the trimmings will be open for anyone.
"With our Fifth Annual Health Fair, The Salvation Army is partnering with more than ten local businesses to provide complimentary services, information, and entertainment for the community. It's also Hurricane Preparedness Week, and we will be sharing this information at the Health Fair", said Captain Brett Meredith.
Salvation Army's Social Services Director Karen Hills says people can get vital scans that can save their lives. She points out that health scans will include free STD screening, in hopes people will take advantage of the testing offered.
But they're also lining up experts to help people get low-cost government subsidized insurance. Kids will enjoy face-painting, and are likely to think it's fun getting the Clerk of Court Kids ID card and finger-printed by the EBR Sheriff's Office.
Hills says the Health Fair, now in its fifth year, has been all about access and friendship. "For the past five years, we've been trying to reach the community with an array of services so people can get testing that they need, have fun and fellowship all in one place."
Some of the participating businesses include EBR Mobile Library, Metro Health HIV Testing, EBR Fire Department, Just Kids Dental, and Our Lady of the Lake Blood Mobile. There will be a chance for people to get free cell phones if they need them. And like previous years, The Salvation Army's Disaster Unit will also be out on property serving light refreshments through the day.
The Louisiana Attorney General's office will do a demonstration on fire safety. And the Baton rouge Fire Department has a dog who will demonstrate good fire safety.
The Salvation Army Health Fair takes place Saturday, May 30th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Headquarters at 7361 Airline Highway.
