Authorities warn parents of teen shootings

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge Parish officials are sounding the alarm after two teens were sent to the hospital because they were shot by accident.

Baton Rouge Police arrested 17-year-old Mekiyah Davis for accidentally shooting an 18-year-old in the chest. The shooting happened on N. 39th street in Baton Rouge. Cpl. Don Coppola said Davis was playing with a handgun.

"It was an accidental shooting. The man was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries," said Coppola.

Just five days earlier, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Deputies said a teen was shot in the back by an 8-year-old who was also playing with a gun. The accident paralyzed the teen from the waist down.

So far this year, East Baton Rouge Parish has had four negligent injury or homicide cases involving accidental shootings. The parish had
only three last year.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said accidental shootings among children usually increase in the summer time when school is out. Moore said parents need to step up to break the cycle of innocent children getting hurt.

"People have to use common sense," said Moore. "It's all gun safety, keeping weapons secured and out of the hands of young kids."
