ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) - West Feliciana Parish residents will have a new hospital to go to after parish leaders decided the current hospital is outdated.
West Feliciana Parish President Kevin Couhig says The West Feliciana Parish Hospital, that is located on Commerce St. in St. Francisville, isn't meeting all of people's needs. He says some medical procedures are no longer performed at the hospital, causing people to go to other places like Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge.
He said the parish is looking to change that by building a new facility directly behind the current one.
"I think the new hospital will provide a lot more and better services to the people who want to live here," said Couhig. "It will provide us with good access to medical care."
The project will cost $25.6 million in bonds. Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy is the chairman of the state's Bond Commission, the group that approved the project. He said he is excited about the plans for the new hospital.
"The new hospital will be a better hospital," said Kennedy. "They are going to have fewer in-patient beds and they are going to expand their emergency room."
Parish officials said it will take two years to complete the project.
