BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Police have arrested a man after he allegedly slapped his girlfriend's 10-year-old daughter in the face.
Police say they received a call just before midnight Monday about a disturbance in the 2700 block of Linwood Avenue.
According to police, neighbors saw smoke coming from inside of the home. A 10-year-old girl then ran to the neighbors house and told them that the kitchen stove was on fire and that her mother's boyfriend, 31-year-old Elliot Thomas, struck her in the face.
When police arrived, they spoke to the victim who told them that Thomas slapped her in the face and told her to get out of the house.
When police spoke to Thomas he admitted he had fallen asleep and woke up when he heard the sound of people in the house but did not admit to slapping the girl.
Police say the fire began because a pot had been left in the oven.
At the time of the incident there were also seven other children in the house who are all under the age of 10-years-old.
Thomas was arrested and charged with cruelty to a juvenile and simple battery.
