Deputies: Victim says teacher is father of her child

IBERVILLE, LA (WAFB) - One of the alleged victims in the Iberville Parish teacher sex scandal recently had a baby, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi says DNA tests are being conducted to determine if the teacher is the father. In a warrant connected to the case, a detective wrote that an alleged victim "advised that she had a sexual relationship with 30-year-old Keavin Keith that produced a son."

The young lady is under the age of 18.

The Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office reported Keith is accused of having sex with three of his former students and was arrested Monday night.

Sheriff Brett Stassi said Keith, who was a teacher of the year, was booked on two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile, five counts of felony carnal knowledge and 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. Keith posted a $100,000 bail.

"It's disturbing that these people would be in that kind of environment and for so long. As we look back, we look for points that would have alarmed us," said Stassi.

According to Stassi, one of Keith's former students reported Monday the two of them had a sexual relationship while she was still a student at MSA West High School, where he was a teacher. Keith was arrested later that night.

Stassi also stated the investigation revealed Keith was allegedly having sexual relations with two other students.

The arrest warrant issued for Keith details alleged sex taking place both inside his classroom and at his home. A neighbor who saw deputies searching Keith's home says he was surprised to hear the news.

Elvis Cavalier is Chief Academic Officer of the Iberville Parish School Board and founded of MSA-West Academy. He said Keith recently won teacher of the year at MSA and was a favorite among students.

One victim told investigators Keith threatened to hurt himself if she came forward. However, the sheriff says she did the right thing. He also says counseling and other services are available for the victims.

"They've been hiding and covering and embarrassed. Once the case is brought to court, some healing can start," said Stassi.

Officials say Keith has no prior arrests. He has been a teacher in the parish school system for six years.
