PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - The Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office reported a teacher accused of having sex with three of his former students was arrested Monday night.
Sheriff Brett Stassi said Keavin Keith, 30, of Plaquemine, who was a teacher of the year, was booked on two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile, five counts of felony carnal knowledge and 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. No bond was set.
According to Stassi, one of Keith's former students reported Monday the two of them had a sexual relationship while she was still a student at MSA West High School, where he was a teacher. Keith was arrested later that night.
Stassi also stated the investigation revealed Keith was allegedly having sexual relations with two other students. The alleged victims are 15 and 16 years old.
Authorities say Keith was put in isolation and was on suicide watch at one point. Sheriff Stassi said when they went to arrest Keith, they feared for his safety.
"He had been tipped off that we were looking for him. we knew we were at his house. in fact we determined his mental capability was fragile at the time and that's why we did what we did," said Stassi.
Authorities say Keith has been taken out of isolation.
Elvis Cavalier is Chief Academic Officer of the Iberville Parish School Board and founded of MSA-West Academy. He said Keith recently won teacher of the year at MSA and was a favorite among students.
"The kids seemed to like him," said Cavalier. "I considered Mr. Keith to be an asset to the school."
Parents were also disappointed about Keith's arrest, but didn't think it should be a reflection of the school.
"It was just one bad apple," said a parent. "I'm not going to judge the whole school on one incident."
Officials say Keith has no prior arrests. He has been a teacher in the parish school system for six years.
