BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Following a big truancy roundup in East Baton Rouge Parish, law enforcement leaders are taking steps to prevent more cases in the future.
Truancy officers are meeting with the parents of those rounded up in two mandatory sessions Monday. Those meetings are geared toward educating parents on the consequences of truancy for them as well as their students.
"It's about the kids," said Roxson Welch, director of Family Youth Services. "So, you do this and you say, 'Well, there are the penalties against the parents, but what about the penalties for the child?' The child has no future. That's the whole point. It's the penalty that is a lifelong penalty if these kids are not in school functioning well."
The second and final session will be held Monday afternoon at the Family and Youth Services Center on Government Street.
