Southern releases names of six finalists for system president

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern University has released the names of the finalists to replace out-going System President Ronald Mason.

The Board of Supervisors voted earlier this year to merge the position of system president with the Baton Rouge campus chancellor, effective July 1.

The six president/chancellor finalists will be interviewed at the Board of Supervisors' next meeting on May 28.

Mason's contract expires at the end of June. He will be the next president of the University of the District of Columbia starting July 1.

The six finalists are:

Ray Belton: Chancellor at Southern University Shreveport (SUSLA). He is a graduate of SUSLA and Southern University Baton Rouge. He has a master of arts in counseling from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a doctor of philosophy in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

Barrett Hatches: President and CEO of Chicago Family Health Center and a former energy executive. He received his undergraduate degree in political science from Jackson State University, a M.A. in management from Webster University, and a Ph.D. in urban higher education from Jackson State University.

Gilbert Rochon: Former president and professor at Tuskegee University. He has a bachelor's degree from Xavier University of Louisiana, a master of public health from Yale University School of Medicine, and a doctorate from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Ivory Toldson: Deputy director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, U.S. Department of Education, Washington, DC. He has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Louisiana State University, a M.Ed. in counselor education from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Temple University.

Victor Ukpolo: Chancellor of Southern University New Orleans. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from The American University in Washington, DC.

Earl Yarbrough Sr.: Former president of Savannah State University. He has a B.A. from Wichita State University, a M.A. in industrial studies from California State University at Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University.
